Bush To Arrive In Denver This Morning, Dissent Awaits Him President Speaking At Fundraiser For Beauprez Kim Ngan Nguyen, Staff Writer September 27, 2002
The Mile High City will welcome President George Bush today and some are already voicing their dissent.
Bush is in town campaigning for 7th Congressional District candidate Bob Beauprez.
The upcoming election and the war with Iraq will be on the president's agenda as he continues to help raise money for GOP candidates.
The $1,000-a-plate fundraiser at the Adam's Mark Hotel will take place at 11:30 a.m and a few security measures are already set up for the big event. Parking meters are off-limits around the hotel so you might want to avoid downtown Denver during that time.
While Bush is here, a coalition of peace groups will be marking his visit with an anti-war rally at the City and County Building. They also plan a protest march to the hotel where Bush is speaking.
The president's visit will be a short one. Air Force One is scheduled to land at the Buckley Air Force Base at about 10 a.m. The fundraiser is at 11:30 a.m. Then Air Force One will take off again at 1 p.m.
More than 500 people are expected at the fundraiser, many of them Colorados' GOP elite.
Bush has been at a fundraiser every day this week, and so far has pulled in a lot of cash for GOP candidates. According to ABC News, Bush has beaten former President Bill Clinton's fundraising record, and at the end of September will have raised $126 million this year.
Democrats say Bush should not mix foreign policy with fundraising, accusing him of playing politics with Iraq, using the issue of war to raise money. He is making his case for war with Iraq every time he speaks at a fundraiser, ABC News reported. Bush's recent statement about how Democrats don't care about national security was at a political fundraiser.
Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle blasted Bush on Wednesday, sparking a war of words between the parties. Beauprez is locked in a tight race with Democrat Mike Feeley to represent the new congressional district. It is a crucial seat for both parties, who need it to gain control of the House.
And on a related note, a man is being detained at Denver Health after he reportedly threatened the President.
The man reportedly walked into Denver Health this morning and was overheard by a nurse saying he was going to kill President Bush.
Denver police were called in and they are detaining the man. The secret service has been notified.
7NEWS will have live team coverage of the president's trip to Denver beginning around 10 a.m.
