A group opposed to war with Iraq said it plans to protest during President Bush's visit to Denver today for a Republican fund-raiser.
The group, Coloradans Against Bush's War on Iraq, said the president's insistence that Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein be replaced, by force if necessary, is little more than an election year diversion.
"I strongly hope that innocent life of Iraqis would not be in jeopardy simply because we need votes," Ibrahim Kazerooni said at a news conference Thursday.
Kazerooni said he is an Iraqi dissident who fled his country in 1974 after being jailed for his political views.
He said Iraqi citizens would welcome U.S. help for resistance movements within the country, but an invasion would be treated differently.
"History shows they will not welcome or support an invading army," he said.
The protest will start at 11 a.m. by the City and County Building, proceed along 14th Street to Court Place and continue past the Adam's Mark Hotel.
Bush will be attending a $1,000-a-plate fund-raiser at the hotel for Bob Beauprez, the Republican candidate for the 7th Congressional District.
"It is outrageous that Bush and his people are willing to lose the lives of the American soldiers and innocent Iraqi people in order to not lose an election," said Howard Greenebaum, one of the organizers of the protest.
