Ashrawi should be commended

On behalf of just-minded people of conscience, we write to applaud Hanan Ashrawi for her tenacity in overcoming forces that would attempt to silence her. Ashrawi has long been a voice of reason and peace in a conflict that has spun dangerously out of control.

We who cherish and value freedom of speech commend Ashrawi for her tireless effort to promote human rights and her consistent rejection of violence and terror by all. In spite of a campaign - that shamefully included a number of our elected officials - to slander and mute one of the most articulate and moderate Christian voices in Palestine, Ashrawi eloquently rose to the occasion offering a perspective not often heard in America.

As students and citizens of the world, it is not simply an option to hear out and understand a variety of perspectives, it is our duty to gather knowledge, participate in dialogue and engage in critical thinking if we are to make appropriate, honorable and responsible decisions as participants in a global community. Despite the many unfounded voices of opposition, we believe that dialogue was achieved, critical thinking was stimulated and justice was served.

Justice is not, nor will it ever be, served in silence. To those who attempt to silence any voice in this country, we ask: what are you afraid to hear?
