Auraria
conference targets U.S. sanctions
,
By Brian Bernbaum, Denver Free Press (University of Colorado at
Denver)
All agreed that last weekend was an opportune one for the second annual
National Organizing Conference on Iraq, held in CU-Denver's North Classroom
Saturday and Sunday. Friday's allied bombings of Iraqi air-defense radar
sites near Baghdad brought wide media attention to the region, bombed weekly
since the Gulf War in 1991. Click

Americani
contro i raid. A Denver nasce il network contro la guerra e contro l'embargo
all'Iraq, Il Manifesto (Rome, Italy), By SERGIO FINARDI
Denver
Uniti e Gran Bretagna contro l'Iraq. Click

Iraqi Supporters Plan Protests,
Denver Post
Americans
who disagree with U.S. bombings and economic sanctions in Iraq plan several
protest actions in coming months. The National
Organizing Conference on Iraq, meeting for a second day in Denver on Sunday,
voted to hold a nationwide Day of Outrage later this year. It "will be
not a violent thing but a day when we express our extreme anger at the
government process here, over the issue of sanctions," said Mag Seaman,
a member of the Colorado Campaign for Middle East Peace, one of about 50
groups from across the country meeting at the Auraria Campus. Also
planned are an Aug. 6 protest of radioactive materials discarded by U.S.
forces in Iraq and other countries, and a June 11 lobbying trip to
Washington.

Group
seeks to aid Iraqi citizens, Denver Post, By Karen Rouse
It's a message they've cried from the sidelines for years: Drop the
sanctions, halt the bombings and ultimately free vulnerable Iraqi citizens
from disease, hunger and death. But with Friday's air strikes on Iraq
by U.S. and British warplanes came a heightened American awareness of
tensions in the region. And delivering that message took on a greater sense
of urgency for about 100 activists participating in the National Organizing
Conference on Iraq this weekend in Denver. Click

Conference
focuses on hardships of Iraqi people under sanctions, Rocky Mountain
News, By Kevin Flynn
From
small-scale street theater to a march on Washington, activists who converged
on Denver this weekend are brainstorming ways to put a human face on the
Iraqi people. Friday's bombing raids on Iraqi radar sites, ordered by
President Bush and the allied British leadership, put an exclamation point
behind the two-day second National Organizing Conference on Iraq, which aims
to end U.S.-led economic sanctions against the government of Iraqi President
Saddam Hussein. Click

Denver
protesters decry airstrikes. Some view bombing in Iraq as `sign toward
escalation', Rocky Mountain News, By Tillie Fong
Two dozen people braved bone-chilling temperatures Friday night in Denver to
protest the U.S. military airstrikes in Iraq. "This was not
justified," said Carolyn Scarr, 57, of Berkeley, Calif., of the
bombing. "The U.S. has no right to enforce a no-fly zone over
Iraq. The justification is that we had to attack the installations that
attack U.S. planes, but Iraq has every right to react to our planes that fly
over their land. We're violating their
sovereignty." Click

Local
Iraqi, Kuwaiti agree raid unnecessary, Denver Post, By Virginia

Feb. 17, 2001 - Their countries were once bitter enemies, but a local Iraqi
and a Kuwaiti were united Friday in their opposition to the U.S.-led
airstrikes near Baghdad. Baghdad native Amar Al-Saher said he is
"opposed to Saddam Hussein, but the continued bombing of Iraq doesn't
solve anything. Click
