Subj: report on Gary's water work
Date: 04/09/02 2:58:27 AM Mountain Daylight Time
Just a quick note - Gary has been doing outstanding work with the Palestinian
Water Authority (PWA), who is working in exile just outside Ramallah. They
had to pack and run when the invasion happened. They didn't even have a map.
Gary gave him his and they slapped it up on the wall in their emergency
office. Gary is working with the head of the PWA in an effort to get water
distributed to Hebron. If I understand correctly, there
is one main pump that supplies several West Bank cities. Right now, water is
going to Bethlehem, filling up it's tanks. Hebron's tanks are running out.
Normally the PWA would simply close the valve and divert water from Bethlehem
to Hebron. Trouble is the valve mechanism sits above Deheisha camp, which is
under fire. Gary is planning to accompany PWA people into
Deheisha as soon as possible as a helper/human shield to get water in to
Hebron's thousands of Palestinian residents. The settler's apparently are
doing fine with their own water lines.
