Tips on living a better life

Homes can easily become outdated due to older interior design elements or because of wear and tear. Quite often, a home can look outdated purely because of maintenance issues, especially if the home is either very new or very old. While it is true there are some unfashionable homes and apartments out there, it is nothing that a little elbow grease won’t fix!
Throwing on a new coat of paint around your home is almost too simple to think of, yet many homes could do with a clean down and recolour. Painting your home (either inside or outside) not only gives your home a fresh new look, but it will also give you a chance to use other colours for your design.
It is also a very cost effective way of updating a worn out home and can be done yourself with a bit of time and patience. Keep in mind that painting your interiors can disrupt your life a little as you will be moving furniture around and using drop sheets to protect your home from paint.
Just carrying out standard repairs on your home can make it look less outdated. Take your storm drains for instance; Are they clogged up or half falling off your house? Just cleaning them and fixing any loose parts will start to make your home look tidier, and remember, these can be painted as well.
If you have to repair any major part of your home, think about how you might be able to take advantage of it before you fix it. For instance, if you had to fix your cornices on the ceiling, you could instead replace them with more ornate designs.
You can give your home a more modern and secure look by using security doors as well as shutters that can close up your house and match your colour scheme. This also has the benefit of adding extra insulation around your windows to reduce heat in summer and cold in winter.
Also try adding some lighting to your outdoor areas, even if it is just a security light or some solar lights. This will act as a deterrent to any potential intruders around your home. It also creates a beautiful atmosphere for entertaining and highlighting your garden in the evening.
Freshening up your home with a cooling system is not all about air-conditioners as some older systems can be better. Combining your air-conditioner with ceiling fans can reduce your energy costs and give your home a more relaxed feel. This will also mean you can get rid of your ugly old upright fans and enjoy the ceiling fans instead. You may even find timber or coloured fans that will really make your home pop!
Freshening up an outdated home is not always about modernising it and you should always keep the house and its history and surrounds in mind. You may even have a home that is heritage listed which will mean that you will have to keep to certain guidelines when updating your home. ‘Old’ is not always bad!
