SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION 01-010
CONCERNING VIOLENCE IN THE MIDDLE EAST
. 101WHEREAS, Colorado’s Jewish community and many other Coloradans are concerned that renewed violence in Israel during the past several months has jeopardized Middle East peace, American security interests, and the very survival of Israel itself; and
WHEREAS, The state of Israel has been throughout its history the closest ally of the United States in the Middle East; and
WHEREAS, The state of Israel came into being by a vote of the United Nations following the atrocities of the Second World War; and
WHEREAS, Israel’s right to exist was originally opposed by the neighboring countries and many Palestinians; and
WHEREAS, Israel has had to defend its right to exist through numerous wars and uprisings; and
WHEREAS, The United States has been a consistent supporter of Israel; and
WHEREAS, Presidents of both political parties of the United States have supported Israel militarily and facilitated peace negotiations; and
WHEREAS, Israel’s lasting security and peace in the Middle East ultimately will be arrived at only through negotiation and a peace process that recognizes the rights and essential humanity of both Israelis and Palestinians; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Sixty-third General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the House of Representatives concurring herein:
(1) That the General Assembly proclaims its support for Israel and recognizes the right of the state of Israel to exist and prosper;
(2) That peace, autonomy, and democratic forms of government can only come from negotiations and not from violence; and
[original wording]
(3) That the General Assembly and the people of the State of Colorado stand with Israel in this time of crisis and call for negotiation
and not violence.[Amended wording]
(3) That the General Assembly and the people of the State of Colorado stand for peaceful resolution in this time of crisis.
Be It Further Resolved,
That copies of this Resolution be sent to President George W. Bush and to the members of the congressional delegation representing the State of Colorado.
